Our Irish adventure has begun! We left home on Wednesday, April 22 at 13.30 hours, slightly later than planned, and drove to Fishguard via Birmingham to check on Liz’s parents’ flat. This all took a bit longer than expected so we didn’t get to our overnight stop until 20.30 hours. The stop was The Harp Inn at Letterstone, about 15 minutes from the ferry port. We were meeting up with Maria and Jane, who also have an Adria Twin called Arty, as travel companions. The inn was a great stopover with 5 designated places for mohos with water and electricity if required (S4S:S38630S). Sadly, the food was mediocre at best and even the Abbots ale was off!

After a very peaceful night’s sleep we had a leisurely morning and then drove up to the ferry port. Our sailing was at 14.00 but check in opened at 11.30 which then gave us plenty of time to peruse the excellent duty free store. The ferry was a replacement one with limited facilities on board so we took advantage of the landside duty free shop to stock up with gin, beer and wine. We had read that wine is very expensive in Ireland due to the higher VAT and excise duties.
Once on board, the crossing was uneventful and the Irish Sea was kind to us. Three and a half hours later we were docked in Rosslare and through immigration and customs with a wave from the officials. We drove down to Kilmore Quay to see its quaint thatched cottages and working harbour before driving back inland to Kilmore village.

We had read about an amazing fish restaurant called Mary Barry’s in Kilmore so we decided that it would be rude not to try it and the added bonus is they let you stop the night (S4S:S49627S). We had the most delicious locally caught fish and chips we’ve ever had with the most delicate of breadcrumb coating. Washed down with a local ale, Guinness and a lager. Perfect.
