A Short Sojourn Away

We had been invited down to Weston Super Mare to visit friends but as they had a full house, we took Dora to make life easier as we could sleep in her. We left on Sunday, June 2 around 13.15 after Liz had done her bit volunteering at a nearby wetland park and had an uneventful but slow journey down. We found a large enough spot to park right outside their flat which was extraordinary given we were close to the front and it was a lovely sunny day! We had time to catch up with old friends before eating out a local Greek restaurant, The Thatched Cottage, that evening.

Sand Bay

In the morning we drove round to Sand Bay for a walk on the beach before a yummy breakfast at Rocksalt Cafe. The beach was pretty empty and provided lovely views across the bay back towards Weston. After breakfast we decided we would make a day of it at Avebury as we needed to be in Clapham, London to pick up a bed frame from 20.00 so it wasn’t worth going home first.

Standing stones with Jo in front

Avebury has the largest stone circle in the world, some of it dating back to 3700BC and is a World Heritage site. It was a great day to wander around the countryside seeing all of the standing stones. We did make the mistake of walking over to The Sanctuary, which we thought was an impressive stone circle but was actually a number of wooden posts stuck in the a field so that was a waste of 3 miles on my dodgy knee!

However, we did have a lovely walk. It all took longer than we had intended so we didn’t leave the car park until nearly 18.00. We stopped at a motorway services for a bite to eat before reaching Clapham just before 20.30. Luckily, the disassembled bed frame easily fitted in the van with the fixed bed hinged up. The versatility of these vans! Back home for around 22.30 and van emptied half an hour later. A lovely 34 hours away.

Not sure who’s oldest!

Miles driven this trip: 359
