A Day on Skye

We couldn’t quite understand why everyone was leaving our lovely stopover at Neist Point until two things happened. One, the sea fog rolled in so you couldn’t see in front of you and two, they closed the road down to the village!

You wouldn’t know you were on a cliff top

However, they opened the road for us to make our way down and we were entertained by many sheep making their way to feeding stations. Very cute. First stop on our tour of the island was the 13th century Dunvegan Castle, home of the MacLeod Clan. Interesting house and more interesting history. It was Flora MacLeod who rowed Bonnie Prince Charlie across the water from the mainland to Skye so he could escape to France. She was imprisoned in the Tower of London for a time.

Next was an early lunch at the Stein Inn. We had heard very good reports of their food so we got there at midday only to find that they were closed for the day as they had no water. So, we then went into our next stop, Skyeskyns. This was a tannery that was set up in the 1980s when they realised that sheepskin was being thrown into landfill after the sheep were slaughtered for their meat. Everything is made by hand. Lovely stuff but somehow we refrained from buying anything.

Next up was the Fairy Glen. An interesting natural phenomenon of grassy tiered mounts that also had a stone circle within it. The stone circle was made by humans but it was still interesting.

After a quick lunch in Dora, we drove up to Quiraing Point where you could see for miles. It was incredibly windy up there so we didn’t hang about. The drive back down through hairpin bends was interesting due to the number of large motorhomes whose drivers didn’t know how to drive!

We then drove around looking at various waterfalls but they weren’t that impressive once you’ve been to Norway or New Zealand!

On our way to our overnight stop in Carbost we had to drive through the main town of Skye, Portree. The harbour was quite pretty and reminded us of Tobermory on Mull.

About 30 minutes later, we made it to our overnight stop at the marina (fancy name for an old harbour) at Carbost (S4S S48712S), the home of Talisker Whisky. It ticked all our boxes, boats bobbing the water, next to a distillery and for a tenner a night. Perfect!
